Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden

A lot of drivers in the paddock have nicknames. Scott Dixon is known as Ice Man (though he recently said in a video he wasn't sure why...okay Scott...sure). To be such a badass of a driver that your nickname is "The Iron Maiden" makes you a clear bad ass.

That is Simona de Silvestro. Iron Maiden. Swiss Miss (I don't like that one as much). Jack-of-all-trades with racing. She's done it all.

Simona was primarily active in IndyCar from 2010 through 2013. It was full of ups and downs. In her first 500 she was named Rookie of the Year and came in 14th. She suffered a crash in Texas that included a fire in the car, and what remains one of the slowest reaction times I've ever seen by the safety crew. She was one of the Lotus drivers in 2012 and was DQ'd in the 500 that year for failing to maintain a speed. In her final year, she achieved a podium at the Grand Prix of Huston, finishing second, and is currently one of only three women with a podium finish in IndyCar.

Prior to her time in IndyCar she drove in the BMW Championship, achieving her first win in 2006. She then drove in the Atlantic Championship. In 2008 she achieved a podium at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. in 2009 she won three times and finished third in the standing.   After leaving IndyCar, and her contract with Sabuer fell apart, Simona turned to Formula E. She became the first woman to score points in the series with a ninth-placed finish at Long Beach ePrix. She's currently in Supercar Championship series, and at times teams up with Renee Gracie, another female racer (that we will be featuring soon!).

I've seen a lot of bad ass quotes from some bad ass women, but I think nothing summarizes this bullshit idea of sexual segregation then this quote: "Gender doesn't matter when you're going 225 km.h into a turn."
